Notes from Our Director:

Many thanks to the 70-plus people who visited the library during our recent Renovation Open House! It was a wonderful show of support for the library, and I appreciated the opportunity to meet many people in the community and to showcase our lovely space.

Spring has finally arrived, and our library's activities are growing along with the buds and blossoms. In addition to our ongoing programs, you will see a number of new library programs added to our May calendar. We will also soon be welcoming a new part-time librarian to the library's staff, who will be dedicated to coordinating our Youth Services Department.

Also during the month of May, the Friends of Castleton Public Library will be holding a special American Girl raffle to benefit the library. The American Girl doll Kaya, including a number of Kaya's accessories and outfits, is the raffle's first prize (total estimated retail value of $600.00). The raffle includes retired American Girl products that can no longer be purchased from the company. Raffle tickets can be purchased in the library from May 1 through May 30 for $2.00 each or 3 tickets for $5.00. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of iPads for the library! The drawing will be held on Saturday, May 30, after the close of the library's American Girl Themed Tea Party. Learn more about the raffle here.

See below for a list of upcoming events at Castleton Public Library. Information about the library is also available 24 hours a day on our website, Facebook, and Twitter.

Do you have suggestions for programs, events, or services you'd like to see at the library? We would love to hear from you! Give us a call at 518-732-0879 or send an email to director@castletonpubiclibrary.org.

News from Castleton Public Library - April 2015
View this email in your browser
Greetings from Our New Library Director:

I'm very excited to come on board as Director of Castleton Public Library. During my first few weeks, I have been warmly welcomed by a number of our patrons and members of the community, as well as by our staff, trustees, volunteers, and our Friends group. If I have not yet had a chance to meet you, please stop in and say hello!

I have begun my work here at an exciting time. Our renovation was completed at the end of 2014, and the library's space in the Castleton Village Hall has been completely transformed. The library now has a bright, open, updated interior, while still maintaining a few touches of the building's nineteenth-century character. If you have not yet stopped by to see the changes, please come take a look! We will be hosting a Renovation Open House on Saturday, April 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. In addition to showcasing the renovation, we will also feature family entertainment, music, and refreshments. I hope to see you there.

We also are now using a new library catalog through Upper Hudson Library System. The new catalog offers a number of improvements, including the ability to search for articles and the option to save your reading history. Have questions? Our friendly staff members are here to help.

I am happy to be part of the library's mission to satisfy our community’s informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs. I welcome any questions, comments, or suggestions that you may have. Feel free to contact me by phone at 518-732-0879 or by email at director@castletonpubiclibrary.org.

Read on for more information about what's new at Castleton Public Library, including some information about our upcoming events. Information about the library is also available 24 hours a day on our website, Facebook, and Twitter.

Best,

Melissa Tacke, Library Director

Preserving Family Photographs and Documents

Monday, April 27, 6:30 p.m.

Castleton Public Library celebrates Preservation Week with a presentation about caring for family photographs and documents. Family photographs and documents can provide a treasure trove of information. Unfortunately, many unique and irreplaceable documents can deteriorate over time due to improper storage and handling or become damaged through attempts at repair.

This informational session will focus on the care of personal papers, photographs, and memorabilia found in the typical home, including factors that accelerate deterioration of materials and how to store, display, label, and handle materials. Discover free and low-cost preservation practices for a variety of media, including photographic prints, slides, and negatives, paper documents, and scrapbooks. Learn what common mistakes to avoid, and learn what to look for when purchasing storage supplies.
