News from Castleton Public Library - March 2026

Notes from Our Director:

Spring is almost here! Stave away cabin fever during the next few weeks by visiting us to borrow a book or movie, stop in for our fun activities for kids, or attend one of our events for adults. We're here to serve you!

Starting this month, we will be hosting our first-ever art exhibit in the library's Community Room! Works of art from K-12 students will be on display in our Art Collective with Schodack Central Schools exhibit from March 6 through May 31.

The art gallery will be open on Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. Call the library at 518-732-0879 to inquire about other times you can stop in to see the exhibit. We hope you will join us on Saturday, March 21 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. for an opening reception. Please stop in to check out the amazing artwork being created by children and teens in our community!

Did you know that the Friends of Castleton Public Library are currently seeking volunteers? Some of the Friends' current volunteer opportunities are:
*Baking for the Friends' bake sales at Music at Schodack Town Park.
*Helping to create/update a Friends Facebook page, website, and database.
*Calling donors to support Friends events.
*Serving as a chair or co-chair to assist in planning Friends events.
*Assisting during Friends events.
*Helping to plan during Friends meetings.

The Upper Hudson Library System hosts a great collection of ebooks, digital audiobooks, digital magazines, and streaming video, resources for research, and more! Click here to visit our page about digital resources.

Borrow a WiFi Hotspot

Did you know that we loan WiFi hotspots? They can be borrowed for 14 days -- all you need is your library card! Hotspots are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can only be checked out and returned at CPL. Call 518-732-0879 or email director@castletonpubliclibrary.org for more information.

WiFi Inside & Outside Our Building

Our WiFi is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can access the public WiFi on the front lawn, or alongside the building on Stimpson Avenue (the signal is strongest near the front of the building). Just look for the network called "Castleton Public Library." There's no password to connect!

Happy New Year! The start of a new year is a great time for a fresh start and to explore new opportunities. Want to spend more time tapping into your creativity, learn how best to tell your story, or explore self-improvement? See this month's program calendar below for information about our offerings this January, including some fun new monthly events like Paws to Read and Cook With Me!

Winter makes for great reading weather, and we're excited to begin our Winter Reading Challenge! The reading challenge begins Friday, January 2. To participate, stop in at the library any time during the challenge to register. You'll get a bingo card with reading/learning activities to complete. The more you read, the more chances you earn to win some great prizes! Hand in your bingo card any time through Sunday, February 22. All ages can participate!

A new year could also be a great time to join the team at CPL! We're currently seeking a part-time Library Aide. Click this link for the job description and how to apply. Please be sure to apply by Thursday, January 8.

The Castleton Public Library is seeking a part-time Library Aide. Weekly schedule generally includes four four-hour shifts on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Routine Duties:
Helping customers at the front desk, shelving library materials, operating the copier and fax machine, performing routine clerical tasks, assisting with program preparation, and answering the telephone. Full civil service position description is below.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has strong customer service skills, is detail-oriented, and can efficiently use a computer for work tasks. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Prior library experience is preferred, but not required.

Pay Rate:
$18.75 per hour.

Schedule:
The hours for the position are generally as follows:
Mondays, 12:00-4:00 p.m.
Tuesdays, 12:00-4:00 p.m.
Wednesdays, 4:00-8:00 p.m.
Fridays, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Library Aide
Distinguishing Features of the Class: This position involves performing the duties of charging and discharging materials and related circulation duties at the circulation desk. Additionally, incumbents sort and reshelve library materials as necessary. Performance of related routine clerical tasks may be required. This work requires no prior knowledge of library work as employees are trained on the job. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director, Librarian, or higher-level library employee. Does related work as required.
Examples of Work:
Charges and discharges library materials;
Sorts and reshelves books and library materials;
Logs in and processes all periodicals and prepares current magazines for shelving, maintains back number stacks and routing;
Maintains files of vertical file material and publisher's catalogs;
Maintains use and acquisition statistics;
Responds to routine questions regarding library rules, hours of operation and location of materials;
Responds to requests from library patrons to assist with research, interlibrary requests and the use of computers and audio-visual equipment;
Typing, filing, and data searches as requested by higher level Library Employee;
Assists in periodic inventory of library materials and AV equipment;
Maintains inventory of supplies and suggests items for acquisition;
Assists in preparation of lists of missing books and books to be discarded;
Oversees the general condition and appeal of the library and its displays;
Performs related routine clerical tasks, including changing books, filing cards, writing and forwarding of over-due notices.
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics: Ability to acquire a working knowledge of library rules and procedures; ability to understand and carry out written and oral directions; ability to deal in a personable and friendly manner with library patrons; accuracy; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma.

Notes from Our Director:

We're offering a variety of classes and events for all ages this month, with lots of fall-time fun! Be sure to stop in any time this month to participate in our October Coloring Challenge! Use your imagination and get creative to color or decorate our special coloring sheet and return it to the library for display throughout October. Each person entering will receive a coupon for a free ice cream cup/cone, courtesy of Stewart’s Shops!

We are also proud to announce that we have added new inclusive tools and resources, in partnership with Bring on the Spectrum. These tools include flexible seating, finger fidgets, noise-reducing headphones, and other interactive items -- all designed to help make the library a more welcoming place for individuals who are neurodivergent, as well as for the entire community. By incorporating these resources, we aim to encourage independence, comfort, and inclusion for all who visit. Come try out these new tools any time the library is open!

Our Stuffed Animal Sleepover is back, with a new summer twist! Send your stuffed animals to the library for a camping field trip. Drop them off anytime between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Friday. We will hold a special storytime at 4:30 p.m.! Then, come back to pick them up on Saturday anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to find out about all of their adventures -- and receive a goody bag for yourself, too!

Pine Cone Hunt and Crafts

This fun craft lets kids turn pinecones into adorable farm animals using paint, felt, googly eyes, and other simple materials. By adding features like ears, tails, and snouts, children can create pigs, cows, chickens, and more while learning about different farm animals. Stuffed Animal Sleepover: Camping Edition

Friday, August 1 - drop off any time from 3:00-5:00 p.m. (Join us for a special storytime at 4:30). Pick up on Saturday, August 2 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Our Stuffed Animal Sleepover is back, with a new summer twist! Send your stuffed animals to the library for a camping field trip. Drop them off anytime between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Friday. We will hold a special storytime at 4:30 p.m.! Then, come back to pick them up on Saturday anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to find out about all of their adventures -- and receive a goody bag for yourself, too!

Notes from Our Director:

Summer is just around the corner, and we're gearing up for our annual Summer Reading Club! We have many exciting programs to attend and activities to complete, keeping kids and teens engaged and active all summer long.

Over the summer, students risk losing some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Participating in Summer Reading helps maintain reading skills and helps kids and teens stay motivated to learn. We also have an early literacy component of our program to engage babies, toddlers, and preschoolers and help get them ready to read.

And Summer Reading isn't just for kids. We're offering programs that are fun for the whole family, as well as programs for adults. By participating in the Summer Reading Club, children, teens, and adults can also enter to win a $25 Amazon gift certificate!

Summer fun at the library begins on Friday, June 27 from 11:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. when the library hosts our Summer Reading Kickoff. Come sign up for our Summer Reading Program and enjoy some free ice cream, courtesy of Stewart's Shops! Can't make it to the kickoff? Registration is open all summer long!
