News from Castleton Public Library - June 2016 View this email in your browser Notes from Our Director:  Summer is just around the corner, and we're gearing up for our Summer Reading Program! This year's theme is health and fitness. We have many exciting programs to attend and activities to complete, keeping kids and teens engaged and active all summer long. Click here to see a full list of all of our summer programs.  Over the summer, students risk losing some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Participating in Summer Reading helps maintain reading skills and helps kids and teens stay motivated to learn. We also have an early literacy component of our program to engage babies, toddlers, and preschoolers and help get them ready to read.  And Summer Reading isn't just for kids. We're offering programs that are fun for the whole family, as well as programs for adults. By participating in the Summer Reading Program, children, teens, and adults can also enter to win a number of great prizes!  Summer fun at the library begins on Thursday, June 23 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. when the library hosts our Summer Reading Kickoff Party. Come sign up for our Summer Reading Program and enjoy some free ice cream. Can't make it to the party? Registration is open all summer. Please call the library during regular business hours to register (518-732-0879) or email our Director.  Color Me Calm: Coloring for Grown-Ups Wednesday, June 1, 5:00-8:00 p.m. Coloring for adults? Absolutely! It's a relaxing, stress-relieving, and fun way to spend an hour or two. We'll also have soothing music and herbal tea to help you unwind.  Story Hour with Miss Linda Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.  May June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30. Join Miss Linda for story time and crafts! Open to all children and their caregivers; suggested age range birth to age 6.  Block Party Fridays from 10:00-11:00 a.m.  June 3, 10, 17, 24; July 1.  Bring your baby, toddler, or preschooler in for group play with wooden blocks, and help develop their skills in early literacy, math and reasoning, logic, social know-how and more!  Family Movie Night - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (PG-13) Friday, June 3, 6:00 p.m. Movie lovers of all ages are welcome to join us at our Family Movie Night!  Bring Your Own Book Club Monday, June 6, 6:30 p.m. Bring a book you've read lately and discuss it with the group! This is a great way to learn about books and authors you might not otherwise encounter. For adults.  LEGO Fun Tuesday, June 7, 4:00-8:00 p.m. We provide the LEGOs, you provide the imagination! Recommended for ages 4 and up.  Saturday Storytime Saturday, June 11, 10:30 a.m.  Join Miss Mia for storytime and crafts! Suggested age range birth to age 6.   Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer's Disease: The Basics Monday, June 13, 6:00 p.m. The Alzheimer's Association will explore memory loss issues and discuss the differences between memory loss brought on by normal aging vs. dementia. Registration requested; call 518-867-4997.  Friends of CPL Meeting Wednesday, June 15, 7:00 p.m. Want to help support and raise funds for CPL? Come join the Friends! All are welcome.   LEGO Fun Thursday, June 16, 2:00-6:00 p.m. We provide the LEGOs, you provide the imagination! Recommended for ages 4 and up.  Father's Day Crafts Friday, June 17, 1:00-6:00 p.m. Come make a special craft for Dad, Grandpa, or another special “Dad” in your life! Library Board Meeting Monday, June 20, 7:00 p.m. Monthly meeting of the Castleton Public Library's Board of Trustees. Members of the public are welcome to attend.  Summer Teen Volunteer Sign-Up Tuesday, June 21, 2:00-8:00 p.m. Calling all teens! Looking for something to do this summer? Need community service hours? Stop by the library to sign up to help us out during the Summer Reading Program!  Summer Reading Program Kickoff Party Thursday, June 23, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. School is out and summer reading is in! You can sign up for SRP all summer long!  Knock Hockey Monday, June 27, 12:00-8:00 p.m. Kids and teens -- bring a friend down to the library any time and play a game of tabletop hockey!  Teen Spa Night Tuesday, June 28, 6:00-8:00 p.m. It's finally summer -- take some time to relax! Enjoy an evening of de-stressing and fun. Teens will craft their own sugar scrubs and bath fizzies, and learn techniques to help manage stress. Sidewalk Science: Elephant Toothpaste Wednesday, June 29, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Join us for some outdoor science! This week we'll create a fantastic foamy fountain of "toothpaste" fit for an elephant!  TED Talk Discussion Series: Exercise and Sports Wednesday, June 29, 6:30 p.m. Join us the last Wednesday of each month for a viewing and discussion of two short TED Talks that share a common theme. June's theme is "Exercise and Sports." TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to "ideas worth spreading." Annual TED Conference invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for up to 18 minutes on a variety of topics.  Sculpture Walk Thursday, June 30, 12:00 p.m. After taking a walk together and collecting natural debris, we'll come back to the library and turn our found items into unique sculptural art projects!
