The Castleton Public Library is a dynamic, community-focused small municipal library located in southwestern Rensselaer County, just 15 minutes south of Albany. We are currently seeking a proactive, enthusiastic, and creative librarian with a passion for and commitment to public service. The Librarian I for Programming and Outreach Services is responsible for planning, conducting, and promoting library classes and events for people of all ages, as well as coordinating and developing the library's outreach efforts. PRIMARY DUTIES:
  • Under the guidance of the Library Director, oversee and coordinate the library's programming and outreach efforts. 
  • Develop, conduct, and evaluate a wide variety of classes and events for youth and adults.
  • Coordinate marketing and publicity efforts for the library's programs and services. 
  • Work with the library's community partners and identify additional opportunities for partnership and collaboration with local organizations. 
  • Develop and administer ways for community members to give feedback about library programs and outreach services.
  • Expand library outreach services for senior citizens.
  • Plan and implement new services for populations defined by NYS as targets for outreach efforts. 
  • Supervise staff members and serve as librarian-in-charge in the absence of the Library Director. 
  • Perform work in collection development, reader’s advisory, reference services, technology help, cataloging, circulation, and other work as needed or assigned.

  • Ability to take initiative and carry out work independently.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and receive guidance and direction.
  • Proficiency and comfort with computer technology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a current New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate at time of appointment. Incumbent must maintain certification throughout employment.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience leading and coordinating library programs.

SALARY: $51,000 per year

SCHEDULE: The position has a 40-hour work week and requires some evening and weekend hours as part of the regular schedule.

CIVIL SERVICE: This position is classified as “Competitive” by the Rensselaer County Civil Service Commission. The successful candidate will have provisional Civil Service status until an examination for Librarian I is given. Permanent appointment is contingent upon the candidate’s completion of the Librarian I exam and their score.

Rensselaer County Civil Service Commission Official Job Specifications:

LIBRARIAN I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  
The work involves responsibility for entry level professional librarian duties.  Employees in this class are expected to learn the specific applications of professional training by the performance of duties under the supervision of professional librarians in higher level positions.  Instructions may be issued at the beginning of each new assignment.  Employees in this class are assigned work progressively more difficult as their experience in the field broadens.  Supervision is exercised over clerical personnel in particular tasks.  Performs related work as required.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
Provides advisory and guidance services to library users;
Performs original cataloging and classification techniques;
Answers reference questions for library staff and users;
Instructs public on the proper use of library resources;
Performs library work in collection development, including acquisitions, evaluation and selection, discarding, weeding and withdrawal of books and non-book materials;
Performs on-line computer searches of databases;
Provides training and conduct of on-line searching to users;
Compiles bibliographies;
Conducts tours, book talks, multi-media programs, story and picture book hours;
Serves as a liaison for activities with community groups or other libraries;
Prepares statistical and/or narrative reports, memorandum and correspondence; 
Supervises the work of and provides direction and guidance to clerical, paraprofessional and volunteer personnel;
Schedules the work of library personnel;
Assists with administering public relations programs;
Keeps informed of professional developments.
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: 
Good knowledge of modern principles and practices of library science; good knowledge of on-line database systems; good knowledge of bibliographical tools and sources; working knowledge of modern library organizations, procedures, policies, aims and services; ability to read and comprehend written materials; ability to carry out assignments; ability to work independently; ability to express ideas clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; ability to get along with patrons; ability to comprehend user’s needs quickly and accurately; ability to perform close detail calculations involving basic arithmetic functions; accuracy; skill in the performance of technical library tasks; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a current New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS:  Eligibility for a New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate.
