Library Director
The Castleton Public Library is seeking an experienced, proactive, energetic, and creative
leader with a passionate commitment to public library service for the position of Library Director.
The Library Director reports to the Board of Trustees and holds primary responsibility for the
overall operation and management of the Library. Duties include, but are not limited to:
planning and implementation of library programs and services, fiscal oversight and budget
management, supervision of library personnel, and management of the library facility. As an
official representative of the library to the greater Castleton Community, the Library Director will
demonstrate an enthusiasm for community engagement and the establishment of effective
working relationships throughout the community. The ability to work collaboratively with the
board of trustees is necessary.
The Castleton Public Library strives to provide access to information, opportunities for lifelong
learning, and a gathering place for the community. A Municipal (Village) Public Library serving
a user population of 1,400, the Castleton Public Library has a total annual operating budget of
$128,000 and occupies a 1,200 square foot facility with an interior that was just completely
renovated.
The minimum qualifications for this position are a Master’s Degree in library science or
equivalent from a school that is accredited by the American Library Association or recognized
by the New York State Education Department; possession of, or eligibility for, a New York State
Public Librarian certificate; and at least two years of professional experience that includes some
supervisory and administrative experience.
This is a full-time position with a competitive benefits package and a starting salary range of
$42,000-49,000, commensurate with experience. This is a Civil Service position and has been
classified as “Competitive” by the Rensselaer County Civil Service Commission. The successful
applicant will have provisional Civil Service status until such time that an examination is given.

venues, and concert halls. Also nearby are many parks, rivers, streams, and lakes, as well as
