NEWS RELEASE: Upper Hudson Library System Brings Digital Bookmobile to Capital Region Aug. 8-9
Albany, NY—E-books are flying off the virtual shelves these days, but many fans of digital books are unaware that their local public libraries are the perfect places to find those great reads and enjoy them for free. In an effort to spread the word about the virtual treasure trove that exists at the public library, the Upper Hudson Library System (UHLS) is bringing the Overdrive Digital Bookmobile to the Capital Region on Aug. 8-9 for an e-book show and tell.
The Digital Bookmobile will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the William K. Sanford Town Library (629 Albany-Shaker Road in Colonie) and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, at the East Greenbush Community Library (10 Community Way in East Greenbush). The public is welcome and encouraged to sample the bookmobile’s digital resources and learn how to download e-books for free from the library.
“E-readers have become very popular in recent years, but a lot of users don’t know that they can get e-books from the library for free. The Upper Hudson Library System has actually been offering digital materials through our member libraries for six years,” said Tim Burke, executive director of UHLS, a cooperative association of the 29 public libraries in Albany and Rensselaer counties. “The Overdrive Digital Bookmobile is a fun way to show everyone the great e-books and other digital resources offered by our public libraries.”
Visitors to the Digital Bookmobile will enjoy a high-tech, hands-on experience. Readers of all ages will learn how to download e-books from the library through interactive demonstrations and high-definition instructional videos. Users can explore the gadget gallery—featuring Kindle®, iPod® touch, Android™ tablet, NOOK™, Sony® Reader™, BlackBerry®, Windows® Phone, and other devices—and learn about portable devices that are compatible with the library’s download service.
The Digital Bookmobile is housed inside an 18-wheel tractor-trailer. This 74-foot community outreach vehicle is a high-tech update of the traditional bookmobile that has served communities for decades. The vehicle is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which help visitors explore the library ebook download service. Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the library’s digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and sample e-books, audiobooks, music, and video. Library patrons in Albany and Rensselaer counties can take advantage of the UHLS digital download service 24/7 when they visit their home library’s website. From there, they can browse the growing collection of bestselling, new release, and classic titles, and check out a digital title with a valid library card.
