News from Castleton Public Library - June 2025 View this email in your browser Notes from Our Director:  Summer is just around the corner, and we're gearing up for our annual Summer Reading Club! We have many exciting programs to attend and activities to complete, keeping kids and teens engaged and active all summer long.  Over the summer, students risk losing some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Participating in Summer Reading helps maintain reading skills and helps kids and teens stay motivated to learn. We also have an early literacy component of our program to engage babies, toddlers, and preschoolers and help get them ready to read.  And Summer Reading isn't just for kids. We're offering programs that are fun for the whole family, as well as programs for adults. By participating in the Summer Reading Club, children, teens, and adults can also enter to win a $25 Amazon gift certificate!  Summer fun at the library begins on Friday, June 27 from 11:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. when the library hosts our Summer Reading Kickoff. Come sign up for our Summer Reading Program and enjoy some free ice cream, courtesy of Stewart's Shops! Can't make it to the kickoff? Our Take-Home Kits Take & Make Craft Kit: Crafting Bonanza Pick up anytime from Sunday, June 1 through Thursday, June 26. Use an assortment of crafting supplies and your imagination to think up a new creation that is all your own! Take & Make Craft Kit: Patriotic Crafts Pick up anytime from Friday, June 27 through Saturday, July 5. Celebrate the 4th of July with a craft kit and lots of stars and stripes! Our StoryWalks June StoryWalk @Schodack Island - My Happy Year by E.Bluebird   Location: Schodack Island State Park, 1 Schodack Island Way, Schodack Landing, NY 12156   The StoryWalk begins near the playground and is available anytime!   Enjoy a StoryWalk with your family! My Happy Year by E.Bluebird will be up all month long. We change the StoryWalk book each month. This month's title is Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection by Charles Duhigg.    Little Ones Playtime Saturday & Sunday, June 7-8, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Little ones ages birth to 5 years are invited to drop in any time on Saturday or Sunday to play with a special assortment of fun toys geared toward young children.  Fiber Arts Workshop   Monday, June 9, 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. For adults and teens ages 16+. Join us for our monthly Fiber Arts Workshop! Whether you're new to knitting and crochet or a seasoned fiber artist, this is the perfect place to share and create in a friendly environment. All skill levels welcome! Yarn and hooks/needles are available to beginners.  Open Mic Night Wednesday, June 11, 6:00 p.m. Musicians and poets - come share your talents! All ages welcome to perform and to watch.   Credit Management for Young Adults   Thursday, June 12, 4:00 p.m. It’s important to learn how credit works and how to manage it properly before taking out credit. This workshop is meant for parents and teens that may be ready to apply for their first credit card or take out student loans. Special Visitor Storytime: Water Safety with Bubbles and Goldfish Swim School   Saturday, June 14, 11:30 a.m. Learn about water safety with books, songs, and our special guest, Bubbles from Goldfish Swim School! Father's Day Crafts Saturday, June 14, 12:30 - 4:00 p.m. Create a handmade gift for Dad or another special person in your life who deserves to be celebrated! CPL Board of Trustees Meeting Monday, June 16, 7:00 p.m. Monthly meeting of the library's Board of Trustees. Members of the public are welcome to attend.  Town of Schodack Community Market   Tuesday, June 17, 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Visit the library's table at the Town of Schodack Community Market to apply for a library card, check out a book, sign up for summer reading...the possibilities are endless!   Afternoon Book Club: Blackouts: A Novel by Justin Torres Wednesday, June 18,  1:00 p.m. Join us the third Wednesday of each month for a book discussion! Books available at the front desk. This month's title is Blackouts: A Novel by Justin Torres. Understanding Diabetes Monday, June 23, 6:00 p.m. Join a Hannaford Dietitian for a close look at the pre-diabetes & diabetes diet. Explore the role nutrition plays in managing blood sugar, reducing risk factors, and lowering risk of diabetes side effects, particularly in type 2 diabetes. Schodack Farmers Market   Wednesday, June 25, 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. Visit the library's table at the Schodack Farmers Market to apply for a library card, check out a book, sign up for summer reading...the possibilities are endless!   Write Your Life: Memoir Writing for Adults Wednesday, June 25, 7:00 p.m.  In this monthly workshop-style class, we will complete writing exercises that spark creativity and share our own pieces with the group in an effort to hone the craft of storytelling. Kids Cook Around the World: Parfaits   Thursday, June 26, 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. Bonjour! Enjoy a trip to France and build your own délicieux parfait! Library Rock Snake Saturday, June 28, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Help us build our library rock snake by joining us to paint a rock and adding to our decorative snake! Uncharted Wild Reptile Show   Sunday, June 29, 12:00 p.m.  Uncharted Wild LLC presents an entertaining, educational, and interactive live animal show for all ages! You can look forward to meeting (mostly scaly) animals and learning some astonishing facts! Included are a variety of snakes, lizards, tortoise, and more. Decorate Our Community Garden Monday, June 30, 12:00 - 8:00 p.m. Design your own paper flower to add to our community garden and color our entryway all summer long!   Summer Salads Monday, June 30, 7:00 p.m. For adults and teens ages 15+. Join us to taste some hearty, healthy salads and take home recipes to try!   Digital Library Resources Check Out Our Digital Collections! The Upper Hudson Library System hosts a great collection of ebooks, digital audiobooks, digital magazines, and streaming video, resources for research, and more! Click here to visit our page about digital resources.  Borrow a WiFi Hotspot Did you know that we loan WiFi hotspots? They can be borrowed for 14 days -- all you need is your library card! Hotspots are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can only be checked out and returned at CPL. Call 518-732-0879 or email [email protected] for more information.  WiFi Inside & Outside Our Building Our WiFi is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can access the public WiFi on the front lawn, or alongside the building on Stimpson Avenue (the signal is strongest near the front of the building).
