News from Castleton Public Library - September 2024 View this email in your browser Notes from Our Director:  Thanks to everyone who participated in this year's Summer Reading Club! We hope you enjoyed a summer full of fun and learning.  September is Library Card Sign-Up Month! If you register for a library card for the first time during the month of September, we'll give you a welcome gift. Spread the word to your neighbors, family, and friends! Signing up for a library card is easy -- adults and teens 16+ need to bring their photo ID and proof of current address. Youth under 16 need to bring their parent/guardian in order to sign up. The Friends of Castleton Public Library will also be holding their Pasta Dinner fundraiser this month. Enjoy a meal and support the library at the same time! Baked ziti dinners come with salad and bread. Save the date for Saturday, September 28! Full details on the Pasta Dinner can be found in the list of events below. Feel free to wear your pajamas or bring a stuffed animal friend to this evening storytime! Ages birth-8.  Learn & Play Storytime Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. September 5, 12, 19, 26; Oct. 3. Children from birth to age 5 are invited to enjoy stories, rhymes, music, and movement! Bridge Club  Fridays at 10:30 a.m.  September 6, 13, 20, 27. Come play bridge with us! Geared toward beginners and players who need a refresher. Our Take-Home Kits Take & Make Craft Kit: Hedgehog Pick up anytime from Sunday, September 1 through Saturday, September 28. Make your own cute garden hedgehog using supplies from our kit and real fall leaves! Take & Make Craft Kit: Spooky Spider Web Pick up anytime from Sunday, September 29 through Saturday, November 2. Make a friendly googly-eyed spider and weave a web for it to hang from! Our StoryWalks September StoryWalk @Schodack Island - Sheep Take a Hike by Margot Apple   Location: Schodack Island State Park, 1 Schodack Island Way, Schodack Landing, NY 12156   The StoryWalk begins near the playground and is available anytime!   Enjoy a StoryWalk with your family! All ages. Spice of the Month Club: Mint   Wednesday, September 4, 7:00 p.m.   For adults. Spice up your life and join us to learn about a different spice or herb each month. We'll talk about the spice, try a food that contains it, and send you home with information, recipes, and the spice of the month to experiment with at home. Legomania   Saturday, September 7, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 8, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.   We’ll have lots of Legos out on both Saturday and Sunday for this all-weekend build-a-thon! Open Mic Night   Wednesday, September 11, 6:00 p.m.   Musicians and poets - come share your talents! All ages welcome to perform and to watch. Special Storytime: Outdoor Games for Little Ones   Thursday, September 12, 10:30 a.m.   Held outdoors, weather permitting. Join us for stories and special games outdoors for littles and their grown-ups! In case of inclement weather, we will hold a regular storytime. Cool Science: Catapults   Friday, September 13, 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.   Make your own super easy and super fun catapult to test, improve, and play with. Apple Fest   Saturday, September 14, 12:00 - 3:00 p.m.   Celebrate fall with us! We will host an apple storytime at 12:00 to kick off the festivities, then follow it up with an apple tasting, vote, recipe share, and a craft to complete. Knock Hockey and Foosball   Monday, September 16, 12:00 - 8:00 p.m.   Bring a friend or family member to the library to play tabletop hockey and tabletop foosball! Library Board Meeting   Monday, September 16, 7:00 p.m.   Monthly meeting of the library's Board of Trustees. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Voter Registration Day   Tuesday, September 17, 12:00 - 8:00 p.m.   It’s National Voter Registration Day! Stop by the library to learn more about who can vote, where to vote, and register online or by mail. Afternoon Book Club - River of the Gods: Genius, Courage, and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile by Candice Millard   Wednesday, September 18, 1:00 p.m.   Join us the third Wednesday of each month for a book discussion! Friends of CPL Baked Ziti Dinner   Saturday, September 28, 4:30 - 7:30 p.m.   Enjoy a tasty dinner and support the library! Ziti dinners come with meatballs, salad, and bread. NYS Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program   Thursday, October 3, 1:00 p.m.   For adults. With severe weather becoming more frequent/extreme, it is more important than ever that New Yorkers are prepared for disasters. This course will teach you to have the tools and resources to prepare for natural and man-made disasters, respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. Marble Run Fun   Saturday, October 5, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.   Design & build a unique maze for a marble to go through, then drop a marble in and watch it work! DIY Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products   Sunday, October 6, 2:00 p.m.   For adults. In this class, you will learn how to make cleaning products that are environmentally friendly and non-toxic, and take home instructions and a sample to get you started. After Dinner Book Club - Atomic Habits: Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results by James Clear   Monday, October 7, 7:00 p.m.   Join us the first Monday of each month for a book discussion! Books available at the front desk. This month's book is Atomic Habits: Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results by James Clear. Digital Library Resources Check Out Our Digital Collections! The Upper Hudson Library System hosts a great collection of ebooks, digital audiobooks, digital magazines, and streaming video, resources for research, and more! Click here to visit our page about digital resources.  Borrow a WiFi Hotspot Did you know that we loan WiFi hotspots? They can be borrowed for 14 days -- all you need is your library card! Hotspots are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can only be checked out and returned at CPL. Call 518-732-0879 or email [email protected] for more information.  WiFi Inside & Outside Our Building Our WiFi is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can access the public WiFi on the front lawn, or alongside the building on Stimpson Avenue (the signal is strongest near the front of the building).
