Notes from Our Director: 

Spring is here! Come celebrate the season by borrowing one of our museum passes for a day trip, or learning and having fun at one of our classes and events for children and teens during the school break from April 12 through April 19. 

The Friends of the Castleton Public Library will also be holding three fundraisers to benefit the library this month (see events calendar below for full details): 
  • Breakfast Fundraiser - Saturday, April 12 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Rensselaer Elks Lodge
  • Bottle and Can Drive - Saturday, April 19 through Saturday, April 26
  • Plant Sale - Saturday, May 3 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at River Rest

A Talk on Sustainability with Author Trent Romer
 
Wednesday, April 2, 6:00 p.m.

Join us for a talk with Trent Romer, author of Finding Sustainability and This is Our Home. Romer has traveled extensively to learn about and apply sustainability in his professional and personal life. He will share insight on his findings and realistic ideas we can all implement in our journey to sustainability.


 
Special Visitor Storytime: Celebrate Spring!
 
Thursday, April 3, 10:30 a.m.

An educator from the Schodack Island State Park will join us for this special storytime as we celebrate the arrival of Spring and learn about how animals welcome in the new season.


 
Drop-In Tech Help
 
Thursday, April 3, 12:00-5:00 p.m.

Stop in anytime with tech questions that our on-site tech guru can help to answer.
Little Ones Playtime

Saturday & Sunday, April 5-6, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. 

Little ones ages birth to 5 years are invited to drop in any time on Saturday or Sunday to play with a special assortment of fun toys geared toward young children. 

After Dinner Book Club - Animal, Vegetable, Junk: A History of Food, from Sustainable to Suicidal by Mark Bittman

Monday, April 7, 7:00 p.m.

Join us the first Monday of each month for a book discussion! Books available at the front desk. This month's title is Animal, Vegetable, Junk: A History of Food, from Sustainable to Suicidal by Mark Bittman. 
Teen Scene: Flat Braid Friendship Bracelets

Tuesday, April 8, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. 

For grades 6 and up. Teens, join us for our first Teen Scene afternoon filled with snacks, music, and friendship bracelets.

Open Mic Night

Wednesday, April 9, 6:00 p.m.

Musicians and poets - come share your talents! All ages welcome to perform and to watch.

 
NYS Citizens Preparedness Corps Training Program

Thursday, April 10, 11:00 a.m.

For adults. This course will teach you to have the tools and resources to prepare for natural and man-made disasters, respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. 

 
Friends of CPL Breakfast Fundraiser
 
Saturday, April 12, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Location: Rensselaer Elks Lodge 2073, 683 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush, NY 12061

Enjoy breakfast while you help benefit the library! Cost is $12.00 for a full breakfast of 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, home fries, pancakes, toast, and a beverage. Children age 12 and under eat for $6.00.

Want to build something cool? Drop in and make a tower or other exciting structure out of Keva Planks!

In honor of Earth Day, let's take something old and make it new again by turning recycled paper into a beautiful scene!

Kids Cook Around the World: Irish Soda Bread
 
Tuesday, April 15, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Stop in to learn about this Irish recipe which dates back to the 1800's! Add a new stamp to your passport, knead some bread dough, and taste test the modern version of Irish Soda Bread.

Perler Bead Crafts

In this STEAM Lab, we'll be playing some brain games which will get you thinking while having fun!

Friday, April 18, 12:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Join us to welcome in the warmer weather by designing a unique mini flowerpot that can house your growing flowers all the days of Spring!
 
Friends of CPL Bottle & Can Drive

Saturday, April 19 through Saturday, April 26.

Save us your empties! Bring your returnable bottles and cans to the library any time during our open hours from Saturday, 4/19 through Saturday, 4/26. All proceeds benefit the library.

Stop by for a weekend storytime and activity geared toward families with young children (ages birth-8) featuring crafts, music and movement, books, and fun!
String Art Cards

Saturday, April 19, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Recommended for ages 8 and up. Discover the art of string and the unique designs you can create with it.
CPL Board of Trustees Meeting

Monday, April 21, 7:00 p.m.

Monthly meeting of the library's Board of Trustees. Members of the public are welcome to attend. 
Earth Day Paper Beads

Tuesday, April 22, 12:00 - 8:00 p.m. 

Recommended for ages 5 and up. Fashion paper beads with recycled paper for a bracelet, necklace or keychain.

Write Your Life: Memoir Writing for Adults

Wednesday, April 23, 7:00 p.m. 

In this monthly workshop-style class, we will complete writing exercises that spark creativity and share our own pieces with the group in an effort to hone the craft of storytelling.

Rainbow Scratch Art

Saturday & Sunday, April 26-27, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Stop by the library to make cool rainbow scratch art using special paper!

 
Career Day: Construction

Tuesday, April 29, 6:00 p.m.

This monthly series highlights all types of professions to offer an educational opportunity to kids and teens about potential future careers! This month, we'll hear from Joe Marotta of Raven Hammer Contracting.
 
Bingo Night for Adults

Wednesday, April 30, 6:00 p.m.

Adults, come play Bingo at the library! Bring your friends and share some laughs with the chance to win book-themed prizes. The game starts at 6:00 p.m.; we'll see you there!

Friends of CPL Plant Sale

Saturday, May 3, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Location: River Rest (Corner of Scott Avenue and Main Street), Castleton, NY 12033

All proceeds benefit the library! An assortment of vegetable plants and flowers will be available, with coffee and donuts also available for purchase. The day will include live music as well -- be sure to stop by!

Check Out Our Digital Collections!

The Upper Hudson Library System hosts a great collection of ebooks, digital audiobooks, digital magazines, and streaming video, resources for research, and more! Click here to visit our page about digital resources. 
Borrow a WiFi Hotspot

Did you know that we loan WiFi hotspots? They can be borrowed for 14 days -- all you need is your library card! Hotspots are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can only be checked out and returned at CPL. Call 518-732-0879 or email [email protected] for more information. 
WiFi Inside & Outside Our Building

Our WiFi is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can access the public WiFi on the front lawn, or alongside the building on Stimpson Avenue (the signal is strongest near the front of the building). Just look for the network called "Castleton Public Library." There's no password to connect!
